Shopify SEO for collection and product pages

Shopify

Shopify SEO for collection and product pages is still decided by canonicals, unique copy, metafields and Product schema, not by a theme skin. Horizon and Dawn both ship templates that can rank or can duplicate themselves into oblivion. I am Alan Vo, a Gold Coast web developer. I have spent 18 years on catalogues, including Magento work where year-on-year sales moved $2.5m when the on-page layer and the merchandising agreed. Shopify is simpler than Magento. It is not automatic.

Shopify's merchant documentation on SEO covers the admin fields. This note is the production layer I actually check on jewellery and knitwear catalogues: what Google and AI crawlers see on a collection URL versus a product URL.

Why Shopify SEO still starts on collections and products

Shopify SEO still starts on collections and products because that is almost all of the index. Homepages rank the brand. Blog posts rank a handful of queries. Money queries attach to a collection (the category intent) or a product (the SKU intent). If those templates are thin, faceted into duplicates, or missing Product JSON-LD, no app that "automates SEO" will save the crawl.

Shopify gives you a search title, a meta description, a handle, and a canonical. It also gives you collection pages that paginate, filter, sort, and sometimes exist as duplicate custom collections overlapping automated ones. Merchants create "New in," "Best sellers," and "All products" that cannibalise the same SKUs with near-identical grids.

Product pages duplicate by variant. Shopify's default is usually a single product URL with variant parameters. Themes and apps that mint unique URLs per variant, or that leave ?variant= indexable without a clean canonical, split signals. Colourway photography is not a reason to index five URLs with the same description.

AI search and classic Google both need the same honesty: a unique title, a paragraph that is not the vendor boilerplate, and structured data that matches the visible price and availability. I wrote the broader store checklist as on-page SEO for ecommerce stores and the schema detail as schema markup for product and article pages. This page is Shopify-specific.

How collection SEO actually works on Shopify

Collection SEO actually works when the collection is a real topic with copy, a clean canonical, and internal links that do not depend on a filter state. Shopify renders collection.liquid or the JSON collection template. The admin "Search engine listing" fields populate title and description if you fill them. If you leave them blank, Shopify falls back to the collection title. That fallback is how 80 collections named "Shop" appear in Search Console.

I write collection titles as Primary keyword - Brand only when the keyword is the collection. "Gold hoops" is a collection title. "Welcome to our beautiful jewellery" is not. Meta descriptions are unique, about 105 characters of useful copy, not a keyword list. Handles stay short and stable. Renaming a handle without a redirect is a self-inflicted 404.

Copy on the collection is not a 2,000-word essay above the grid. It is 80 to 150 words that name the products, the materials, the use, and who it is for, placed so the grid still starts quickly on a phone. I often put a short intro above and an FAQ or material note below the product grid so LCP stays on the first row of images, not on a wall of text.

Pagination should canonical to itself or to the view Google documents for your pattern, consistently. Mixed signals (page 2 canonicalised to page 1, while infinite scroll still exposes ?page=2) waste crawl. Filter URLs from apps are the bigger leak. If every colour and size combination is indexable, you have a Magento-style facet problem on a Shopify budget. Noindex or canonical filtered views unless a filter is a real landing page you wrote copy for.

Automated collections that overlap ("Gold" vs "Gold jewellery" vs a vendor tag collection) need a winner. Redirect or noindex the losers. Shopify will not pick for you.

Sitemaps include collections and products by default. Exclude gift-card collections, internal merchandising collections, and empty collections. In Search Console, watch "Duplicate without user-selected canonical" on collection URLs. That report is usually the filter app.

How product page Shopify SEO actually works

Product page Shopify SEO actually works when each product has a unique title, a unique description that is not the manufacturer's PDF pasted twice, a single canonical, and Product JSON-LD that matches price, currency, availability and, if you show them, reviews.

Shopify's product title in admin is often the merchandising name. The search title can differ. I use the search title for the SERP: product name, a distinguishing attribute, brand. I do not stuff five synonyms. I do not put the price in the title. Prices go stale.

Descriptions belong in the product description and in metafields for structured facts: material, millimetres, care, origin. Themes should print metafields as visible HTML, not only as app tabs that search engines may underweight. Luxury and knitwear shoppers need those facts. Crawlers need them too.

Variant SEO: keep one product URL. Let ?variant= canonical to the product. If you sell colourways as separate products, that is a catalogue decision with a cost (split reviews, split inventory messaging). Do not do it only for SEO.

Images need descriptive filenames and alt that describe the object, not "image1." Horizon and Dawn both pass alt from the media library. Empty alt on a jewellery PDP is a missed product attribute.

JSON-LD: Shopify's built-in product structured data has improved, but apps and themes still inject extras. I view source and keep one Product with Offer. availability must match the button. Out-of-stock products that still say InStock get rich-result spam and angry customers.

Canonical mistakes I still see: canonical pointing at a CDN URL, a market subdomain fighting hreflang, or a theme that prints the canonical without the chosen market primary. Markets are a localisation project. If you sell AU and EU on separate domains, hreflang has to be reciprocal. If you use a single domain with /en-au/, do not let the default market index twice.

Production checklist for Shopify collection and product SEO

  1. Export all collection titles, handles, search titles and descriptions. Fill blanks. Deduplicate overlapping collections.
  2. Write 80-150 words of unique collection copy for every collection you want indexed. Noindex the rest.
  3. Decide the filter policy: which facet URLs are landing pages, which are canonicalised, which are noindex.
  4. Confirm pagination canonicals and rel next/prev if you still expose pages.
  5. Export product search titles and descriptions. Flag duplicates (same description on 20 SKUs).
  6. Map metafields for material, size, care, GTIN/barcode, country of origin. Print them on the PDP.
  7. Verify one Product JSON-LD graph per PDP. Test with Google's rich results tool.
  8. Confirm variant URLs canonical to the product. Disable apps that index variants as separate pages unless you meant to.
  9. Set image alt on the top products by revenue first, then the long tail.
  10. Add internal links: collection to child collections, product to two relevant collections, related products that are real siblings.
  11. Redirect retired handles. Shopify creates redirects for some admin changes. Do not assume it caught a wholesale handle rewrite.
  12. Submit sitemaps. Remove search, cart, account, filters and empty collections from the indexable set.
  13. In Search Console, separate product and collection URL groups. Watch canonical conflicts weekly after a theme change.
  14. After a Horizon migration, re-check that metafields still render. Theme-block rebuilds drop facts and keep the photos.

What breaks Shopify SEO on real stores

Theme rebuilds drop description HTML or move it below an app block that never server-renders. Google sees a gallery and a buy button. That is a thin product.

Apps that rewrite titles with "best" and the year. Titles churn. Rankings churn. Stop the app.

Multiple collections with the same products and the same three sentences. Cannibalisation looks like "Google will not rank our category." Google ranked one of them. The rest are copies.

Markets without hreflang. The US theme indexes on .com and /en-us and a preview URL. Pick a primary per market.

JSON-LD that says 0.00 because the theme reads a compare-at price field that is empty. Offer is invalid. Rich results drop.

Infinite scroll without paginated URLs. Crawlers may not load the 80th product. Provide pagination or a renderable full list.

robots.txt and AI crawlers: Shopify's default has changed over time. Do not copy a Magento robots file that bans useful bots. Do not open cart and checkout. Collection filters still belong off the index.

How I measure collection and product SEO

I measure indexed coverage, unique titles, and landing-page queries. Search Console: pages indexed versus excluded (duplicate, crawled currently not indexed, canonical). Rankings for collection head terms versus product long-tail. Organic landing pages should include collections, not only home and a blog post from 2019.

On-page: crawl with a site crawler. Duplicate titles, missing H1, missing canonical, mixed trailing slashes. Shopify H1 should be the product or collection title, once.

Revenue: organic sessions to PDP and collection, add-to-cart from those landings. I do not invent conversion lifts for Shopify SEO work. The Their Nibs conversion numbers were a theme rebuild, not a meta-description pass.

For AI citations, unique material and origin copy on the PDP is more useful than a keyword in the title. If the only unique sentence is "Shop now," nothing will cite you.

Luxury and knitwear PDPs are where this checklist is not theoretical. The Tamannaah Fine Jewellery Shopify Plus storefront has to carry precise product facts next to photography. The Roberto Collina knitwear store has to explain fit and material on listing and product pages without turning the grid into a brochure. Collection copy and metafields are part of that production layer, the same as the theme.

FAQ

Does a new theme improve Shopify SEO by itself?

No. A new theme can fix missing H1s or break metafield output. Shopify SEO for collection and product pages depends on unique listings, canonicals and schema. Horizon does not write your collection descriptions.

Should every Shopify collection be indexed?

No. Index collections that are a search-worthy topic with unique copy. Noindex merchandising buckets, empty collections, and filter combinations you did not build as landing pages. Shopify SEO is also knowing what not to rank.

How do metafields help Shopify SEO on products?

Metafields store facts the description field usually mangles: millimetres, yarn, hallmarks, GTINs. Printing them as HTML gives crawlers and shoppers the same structured content. Schema can then match what is on the page instead of inventing an Offer.

Do I need an SEO app for Shopify collection and product pages?

Not first. Fill admin SEO fields, write unique copy, fix canonicals and schema, then consider an app for redirects or bulk edits. Apps that autogenerate titles often create the duplicate-title report you will later pay to clean up.
